Making AI-Infused Products and Services More Legible

چکیده
Abstract The increasing availability of large data sets has initiated a resurgence in artificial intelligence (AI) research. Today AI is integrated into wide variety so-called smart products to personalize user experiences. Smart technologies are typically designed for ease use, with their complex underlying procedures (intentionally) obfuscated; explaining particular outcomes hampered by inherent ambiguity. This lack legibility leads misconceptions about how works. Through design research, the authors address challenge designing iconography as an accessible way communicate and better understand role increasingly play our everyday interactions.

Making Heritage Legible: Who Owns Traditional Medical Knowledge?
In recent years an increasing number of state-based heritage protection schemes have asserted ownership over traditional medical knowledge (TMK) through various forms of cultural documentation such as archives, databases, texts, and inventories. Drawing on a close reading of cultural disputes over a single system of TMK—the classical South Asian medical tradition of Ayurveda—the paper traces so...

Why Heideggerian AI Failed and how Fixing it would Require making it more Heideggerian Hubert L. Dreyfus I. The Convergence of Computers and Philosophy When I was teaching at MIT in the early sixties, students from the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory would come to my Heidegger course and say in effect: “You philosophers have been reflecting in your armchairs for over 2000 years and you still...
متن کاملGenerating Legible Motion
Legible motion — motion that communicates its intent to a human observer — is crucial for enabling seamless human-robot collaboration. In this paper, we propose a functional gradient optimization technique for autonomously generating legible motion. Our algorithm optimizes a legibility metric inspired by the psychology of action interpretation in humans, resulting in motion trajectories that pu...
متن کاملAdding AI to Web Services
The FX-Agents project consisted of members of the Stanford Logic Group and industrial visitors from NEC and Intec Web & Genome working together to develop new technologies based upon the combination of Web services and techniques from artificial intelligence, using our experience in AI-based software agents. This two-year project ran from April 2001 until March 2002 and explored the then emergi...
متن کاملMaking Computers More Useful and More Usable
97 Useful computers which are not usable are of little help; but so are usable computers which are not useful. One of the major goals of our research is to achieve these two goals simultaneously. We claim that useful computers have to be complex systems with a rich functionality. To make these systems usable and to exploit their power, we have constructed a variety of computer-based intelligent...
